I'm an active member of Alpha Phi Omega, a co-ed community service fraternity on campus. Our more than 100 AU brothers (the gals are called "brothers" too) are active throughout the D.C. area in homeless shelters,
children’s learning programs, education, the national parks, and more.
So on Saturday, a bunch of us metro'd over to the National Building Museum (which I had never heard of before) in Judiciary Square to volunteer at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF) Gala. The place looked amazing. I've uploaded some photos from the event to give you an idea, but you really had to be there to get the full effect of it.
We were assigned
to assist with the silent auction, making sure none of the items "walked away," and then to help flag down bidders using giant lightsaber-esque things (heh heh) during the live auction.
The enormous museum lobby was packed with people, and there were tons of famous faces there, too. In fact, I almost ran into Wolf Blitzer...literally.
Anyway, the event was an amazing success. Our group did so well with the auction that a woman from the D.C. Children's Hospital Foundation asked if we could help at their gala in the spring. AU is definitely a service oriented
school, and Alpha Phi Omega really makes doing community service a lot of fun.
And oh yea, the gala raised over 2 MILLION bucks for juvenile diabetes research. In one night. Isn't that nuts!?
