So it's Friday night, and I should probably be out in the city doing something fun. But instead I'm stuck here in my room doing homework. This semester I took a Speechwriting class with Prof. Lehrman. He's great, but he makes us email him our speeches by 10:00AM on Sunday morning. And we have at least one speech to write every week.
Anyway, we have a 600-750 word speech due this week. I think I'm going to write mine on wildlife preservation, even though I know nothing about it. These speeches are tough. I've taken longer time writing a speech than I have 10 page papers before. That's because you have to research SO much for each speech. You need an interesting beginning and humor, plus concrete detail as well.
It's a great class, though. It's a 500-level, which means it's technically a graduate level course, but the class is 1/2 grad - 1/2 undergrad. It's a nice mixture. Prof. Lehrman is really knowledgeable about writing speeches. He was Gore's chief speechwriter (when he was VP) and now writes speeches for the CEO of Pfizer.
Anyway, I better get working on that speech now. It would be nice to have a rough draft to edit tomorrow before I have to email it in.
