Washington, DC is full of so many amazing opportunities. As someone who's from a small suburb in Pennsyltucky (central PA), I really appreciate the incredible events and experiences this city has to offer.
For instance, last weekend I went to my first ever Passion
conference. Passion is mov
ement of college
students desiring to see spiritual awakening come to campuses across the nation
(and the world). Chris Tomlin, Matt
Redman, and Charlie Hall all played live throughout the conference, which took
place just outside the city on George Mason's campus. Overall, 3,000 college students showed up
from across the nation, but most of them came from the DC area.
Louie Giglio did a lot of the teaching their and just
encouraged us not to let a few screw-ups in life get us down. Francis Chan was there, too. You should really check him out. His perspective on God seriously changed my
life.
One of the things I like most about Passion is its emphasis on
serving. Through various partner organizations,
those 3,000 college students really helped out the community in DC and around
the world. We gave $42,201 to build 14
wells in Africa (since water-born diseases
like malaria kill more people than AIDs). Plus, they collected towels and socks for DC homeless shelters. 3,000 students gave 11,117 pairs of socks and
2920 towels. It's amazing how much some
poor college students can do when everyone chips in just a little bit. Oh, and on top of all that, we raised $36,217
for a Passion conference that's going to be held in Kampala, Uganda. They're expecting 30,000 college students at
that one. 30,000!
Finally, the two-day conference (Friday night and all day
Saturday) was an awesome time of
community for the Gathering, an awesome
Christian ministry on campus that
meets every Tuesday night @ 9:00 in the Kay
Center. We had 20 people go to Passion and I'm sure it made a huge impact on
all of our lives. I know it did for me.
Oh, and I threw some pictures up to give you an idea...It was incredible!
