Bolivian President Evo Morales spoke at AU last month in his first visit to DC. He is known as the country's first indigenous head of state in nearly 500 years.
Although Morales has been praised by some for his populist policies, he is a member of Bolivia's Socialist Party known as MAS (Movimiento al Socialismo). He has established ties with other Socialist and anti-American world leaders like Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, Cuba’s Fidel Castro, and Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
According to American Today, Moraleas spoke in Spanish and utilized a translator for the crowd. He was in Washington to speak at the Organization of American States (OAS).
We have many world leaders come to campus on a regular basis. And although they may not all be strong allies of the U.S., AU always supports education and dialogue. You don't get heads of state dropping by on just any college campus.
